Joseph Atherton was born in 1728 or 1729 in Harvard, MA.

In 1742, Peter Atherton of Harvard was appointed guardian to Joseph, age 13 years.[1]

He married Sarah Hutchins on December 19, 1752 in Harvard.[2]

Military Service in the Revolution

Joseph served as a private, as summarized below. The service description is based on Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors, p 327-8.[3]

  • April 19, 1775: marched on Lexington Alarm to Cambridge. Served under Col. Asa Whitcomb's regiment, in the 4th company under Capt. Joseph Fairbanks. Served for 24 1/2 days.
  • September, 1776: marched to Dorchester Heights with Col. Dike's regiment. Returned to Harvard around November 30, 1776.
  • August 19, 1777: marched on alarm at Bennington with Col. Josiah Whitney's regiment in Capt, Samuel Hill's company. Served for 6 days.

Joseph passed away in 1789 in Harvard.[4]
