Biography

Elizabeth (Atherton) Mather immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
This profile is part of the Atherton Name Study.

Elizabeth was first wife of Timothy Mather, and she was the mother of all of his children. (It is his second wife Elizabeth who died in 1709/10 and is buried in Dorchester Burying Ground). Some older resources call her "Catherine Atherton". Children: Samuel Mather, Nathaniel Mather, Richard Mather, Catherine Mather, Nathaniel Mather, Joseph Mather, and Atherton Mather.

Probate records identify heirs of Humphrey Atherton, including Elizabeth Mather - no Catherine and no Weeks heirs (several pages, paid site) [1]

Research Notes

Powers of administration of the Estate of Maj. General Humphrey Atherton were granted to Jonathan Atherton, his eldest sonne, and Timothy Mather, James Trowbridge and Obadiah Swift, three of his sons-in-law, on behalf of the Widow, themselves and the rest of the children...[5] Timothy Mather acted as one of the Administrators who executed a July 1, 1664 deed confirming an inter vivos transfer made his "Deare Ffather" to others.[6]
