Douglas Paul Atherton, age 62, died November 5, 2012, in Carlsbad, California, of lung cancer. Born July 5, 1950, at Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Beloved son of the late Harold Starr and Margaret (Gillett) Atherton, formerly of Pleasant Ridge. Doug was a 1968 graduate of Ferndale High School. He joined the Army and was stationed at SHAPE in Belgium, followed by Bien Hoa, Vietnam. After the Army, he moved to Denver and attended Metropolitan State College. He graduated with highest honors and became a CPA. He married Carolyn Taylor White in March 1975, in Denver. He is survived by two sisters; one niece and four nephews and their families, and his former wife. Doug's passion was fly fishing, as well as researching genealogy on the computer. Interment will be at the Great Lakes National Cemetery near Holly, Mich. on Monday, August 12, at 11 a.m. with military honors.
