Analysis of the 442 officers of Galway between 1440 and 1655 revealed that median age at first office was 25 years of age. Walter and his brother Edmund were appointed Assessors to evaluate all assets of the Galway Corporation in 1590. [Galway Corp Record Book, Liber-A]. This suggests a a birth date of Est. 1566.
Generally, merchants began their apprenticeships at age 12-14, which were usually of 7 years duration, and followed by 4-5 years of establishing themselves before taking on apprentices of their own. This would suggest an age of 24-25 minimum for Walter at the time of the 5 Oct. 1591 apprenticeship noted in the biography, also suggesting 1566 as an est. date of birth.
