Biography

Muriel had three brothers and three sisters. She was my mother, and I could write pages and pages about her. I hardly know where to begin, and certainly do not know where to end. Suffice to say she was a dearly loved and loving wife and mother. From the earliest days she taught her children about Jesus, and they learned to pray through her example. Muriel was provided with the best possible education. Her father, a school headmaster, was pleased that his daughter was able to attend University High School. Her mother bought a piano and encouraged Muriel to become a proficient pianist. Her parents were members of the Highfield Road Methodist Church in Surrey Hills (Vic), and as a child Muriel was surrounded by their Christian love and example. The Christian Endeavour Movement gave her opportunity to deepen and express her faith. Muriel felt a sense of calling to become a missionary, and most likely she envisaged this as venturing into some overseas field of service. It was, then, somewhat of a surprise to her to discover that her mission was to be the wife of a Methodist Minister, serving in various places in Victoria and Tasmania.

I am hoping that each of my sisters will add to this story of our mother. She was only 69 years of age when her dear husband (our father) died. They had been married for 41 years and were deeply devoted to each other. My mother remained a widow for many many years, and sometimes felt a great loneliness as, one by one, various family members and friends died. One consolation for her was that her younger sister Beryl lived not far away. Muriel celebrated her 96th birthday a month or so before she died. One of the hardest days of my life occurred after our mother had had a fall in the aged care Hostel where she was living. After time in hospital, and in a rehabilitation home, it was time for her to move into a Nursing Home. Although I accepted that she needed Nursing Home care, it so very difficult to see her uncertainty about what was happening, and to know that she would have found it so very hard to lose just one more piece of independence.
