Zachariah T. Atkins[1][2] was born in June 1847 in Virginia,[3] the second of seven children and five sons of Joseph and Elizabeth Shugart Atkins.
On 23 April 1875, when he was twenty-five years old, Zachariah married twenty-three-year-old Nancy Adelaide "Nannie" Beattie,[4] the sixth known child and fourth daughter of Absalom and Eliza Preston Davis Beattie and grand-daughter of William and Mary Allison Beatie. (Absalom was the ninth of thirteen children and the seventh of nine sons of William and Mary Beatie.)
