Clara Atkins was born at Amersham in Buckinghamshire, England on 10th August 1875, [1], the third child and second daughter of Benjamin Atkins and his wife Amelia Gibbs.

Nothing is known of Clara's life until 1894 when she became a member of the Baptist Church's Meeting House at Lower Amersham as a young woman:

≈ Amersham Lower Meeting House Minute Book [microfilm #NB1/1: Volume 3: Revised List of Members, 1 January 1889; held by Aylesbury County Record Office, Buckinghamshire] -Clara ATKINS; admission info: 1894; mode of admission: by baptism; received by JW Colley.

Just over two years after this Clara can be found as a passenger aboard a ship en route to Algoa Bay at Port Elizabeth in South Africa. The ‘Goorkha’, a vessel of 3975 tons, sailed from Southampton, England on 4th September 1897 that had the potential to be an exciting voyage! The master, Captain F J Mosely, recorded his expectation that the trip should take 49 days. On record, too, is the fact that he had sufficient provisions aboard for 300 people … although the number of statute adults aboard was actually 456, well over 50% more than he had loaded provisions for!!
