John Atkins is a Qualifying Ancestor of the Jamestowne Society

John Atkins was a Jamestown colonist.

John Atkins^[1][2]

John Atkins was born c. 1600,^[3] probably in England. In 1623, he immigrated to Jamestown aboard the ship Gift^[4] He settled in Warresqueak (present-day Isle of Wight County), where he was reported in 1624^[5] and again a year later in the Muster of 1624/25 in the household of Edward Bennett, where he was listed as one of twelve servants.^[6]

On 8 Apr 1629, John Atkins, giving his age at 29 years or thereabouts, testified at the hearing of Thomas Hall, a person of indeterminate gender. When Capt. Basse asked Hall if he was a man or a woman, Hall replied that he was both.^[3]

After gaining his freedom, John apparently remained at Warresqueak and became a trusted and respected member of his community, for he served as a Burgess for Warresqueak in the assembly of 1629-30.^[7]
