He married Elizabeth Hutchins, the daughter of John Hutchins Sr and Elizabeth Wright. Her parents migrated from Maryland into Virginia before settling in North Carolina.

Will and Death:
John Atkins Sr made his will 26 Nov 1792 in Wake, North Carolina (Bk 2, p.252-4). It was proved in Dec 1792 court and recorded 17 Jan 1793. It names his wife Elizabeth and only some of his children: Ica, Lewis, William, Hutchens, Sally and Betsy Atkins. His wife and son William are made executors. [8] He died about Dec 1792 when his will was proved.

In the name of God Amen, I John Atkins of Wake County in the State of North Carolina being Sick and weak of Body yet of Sound and disposing Sense and Memory do make and Ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in Manner and form following Manner, (To Wit)
Imprimis, I give and Bequeath to my Son Lewis Atkins his Heirs and assigns forever One Tract of Land Lying in Cumberland County on Black River Containing Six Hundred and forty acres, also one Negro Man Called George, also all my Blacksmith tools.
Item, I Give and Bequeath to my Son Hutchens Atkins his Heirs and assigns forever One Tract of Land lying Between Buck Branch and Bullens Glade Containing Three Hundred and twenty six acres; Also all that part of one other tract which lies westward of the Reedy Branch including my old plantation on Buck Branch but subject Nevertheless to Conditions hereafter.
Item, I Give and Bequeath to my Son Ica Atkins his Heirs and assigns forever One Tract of Land taken up by John Rice, whereon I now live containing Six Hundred and forty acres, Also all that part of a tract of Land already given to my Son Hutchens which lies Eastward of the Reedy Branch including apart of the plantation whereon I now live, Also One Horse and Saddle, and One Featherbed and furniture, but Subject Nevertheless to conditions hereafter.-
Item, I Give and Bequeath to my Daughter Sally Atkins her heirs and assigns forever One Negro Boy Called Jim One Horse Creature, Two Cows and Calves, One Featherbed and furniture.
Item, I Give and Bequeath to my Daughter Betsy Atkins her heirs and assigns forever One Negro Boy Called Dick [new page] Dick, One Horse Creature, two Cows and Calves, One Side Saddle, and One Featherbed and furniture.
Item, I Lend to my loving Wife Elizabeth Atkins the Use of the Plantation whereon I now live, also the use of my Old Plantation on Buck Branch during her Natural life, I also Give and Bequeath to my said wife, to her, her Heirs and Assigns forever, all the rest and Remainder of my Estate both Real and Personal which I have not already given, but with with this condition, that my said wife is to pay and discharge all my Just debts out of the same.
Lastly, I do hereby Constitute and appoint my loving Wife Elizabeth Atkins my Executrix and my son William Atkins Executor of this my last Will and Testament, and do disannul and make void every other former will by me made, Ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and Testament, In Witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this 26th day of November 1792.
