Biography

Augustus Atkins was born October 5th 1883 in St Helens, Lancashire. He was the son of George Atkins and Mary (Prescott) Atkins. His birth was registered in the final quarter of 1883, in Prescot district.

By April 5th 1891, the family was still in Water Street. There were five children in the household - William aged 12, Agnes (9), Augustus (7), Albert (4) and Austin (2). There was also a boarder, Joseph Rice, who was sixteen and working as a bench minder.

Augustus' father died in 1895 in St Helens, aged 47. His death was registered in the last quarter of the year.

Augustus' mother Mary married James Hunter in 1900, in a registrar-attended ceremony.

By March 31st 1901, they were living in Hardshaw Street, St Helens. James was working as a coal hewer. Four of her children from her first marriage were living with them: William James Atkins (22, and a labourer repairing roads), Augustus (17, and a plate glass grinder), Charles Albert (14 and a plate glass polisher), and Peter Austin (aged 12), and there was also a boarder, John Devine.

Augustus married Charlotte Jones in 1904 at St Nicholas' Church in Sutton (Anglican).

By April 2nd 1911, Augustus and Charlotte were living in Windle, and had started a family. Two Joneses, perhaps Charlotte's brothers, were boarding with them.

At some point after 1911, Augustus seems to have changed his name to Augustine.

By 1950, Augustine had retired (from his job as a school attendance officer). His brother William James died that year, and Augustine was his executor.

Augustine died on March 8th 1972 in St Helens. His address was 58 Kendal Drive, Carr Mill, St Helens.
