Biography
John Atkinson and Sarah Ann Black registered their marriage intention April 4, 1867, at Mount Holly Monthly Meeting, which was part of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.[1][2]
John was a civil engineer. He was an engineer in Boston Harbor and on the Hoosac Tunnel. He was the head of the St. Bernard Mining Company and a pioneer operator of the western Kentucky coal fields. He established a tree nursery on company land so that forests could reclaim the mined land. He died of a mysterious blood disease at his summer home near Wrightstown, New Jersey.[3]
In 1900 the family was living in Earlington, Hopkins, Kentucky, where John was employed in the management of a coal mine.[4]
Sarah Ann Black Atkinson died in Louisville in 1900.
In 1910 John was remarried to Anna Newbold Black, daughter of Edwin Black and Euphemia Newbold. In that year John and Anna were living in Earlington, Kentucky with their own daughter, Anna N Atkinson, age 3.[5]
