I am Carolyn Martin, first child of James Atkinson and Yvonne Stewart. I was born in Jacksonville, FL, but we moved to Key West, FL, my mother's hometown, when I was two months old.[1] My mother and her maternal line were "Conchs". My mother's maternal grandparents were born in the Rock Sound, Eleuthera, Bahamas, and immigrated to Key West with their families about 1880.

I started researching my ancestors about 30 years ago. It was my mother's line I was most interested in, but quickly hit a brick wall. It was only the last few years that I began finding pieces to go back a few more generations with family in the Bahamas. People in the Florida Keys genealogy group on Yahoo and subscribers to Gabby Conch have helped me so much in recent years.

I also wanted to find out about my maternal grandfather's family but hit a snag again when I discovered his father was illegitimate and there is no known record of who is father was (or none I have yet discovered). Even after hiring an Ancestry Pro-genealogist to investigate, his biological father has remained elusive.

I had my DNA tested through Family Tree DNA and Ancestry DNA. I have found so many cousins through those tests that I would probably have never connected with otherwise.

On a personal note, I was raised in Key West, graduated from Key West High School in June, 1966, [2][3]then went to college at University of Florida (1966-1970) and graduate school at Florida State University (1970-1974). I have a Master's in Clinical Psychology.

I married Dale Keith Martin on 19 June 1971 in Monroe, Florida, United States.[4][5] My husband and I settled in Tallahassee, Florida. For 37 years I commuted to work at Decatur Seminole Service Center in Bainbridge, Georgia. I started as a psychologist testing people for eligibility for the newly opened program, then later became the behavior specialist senior then social services coordinator, and finally director, before retiring in 2011.

Along the way, I had two beautiful daughters, then later divorced (1986). [6]

I also have an Internet business on Ruby Lane, called Alley Cat Lane Antiques and Collectibles. I love selling antiques and collectibles.

I entered a relationship with Phillip Conte in 1991, that continues to this day.

Research Note

Ancestry ProGenealogist, Joseph Shumway, was hired in June, 2016, to try to determine the father of Luther Stewart as he was illegitimate and retained his mother's maiden name of Stewart. A comparison of DNA from three great grandchildren of Luther Stewart's, descended from three different Luther Stewart's children, led to the strong suspicion that Luther's unknown father may have been a Comer. All the of great grandchildren have a lot of DNA that match up to Comer people, particularly from Union, South Carolina. The three great grandchildren were Wayman Stewart, Jennifer Yesil and Carolyn Martin. None of the great grandchildren are aware of any Comer ancestors in their line.

Another conclusion drawn from the research was that Daniel Comer was a direct ancestor of Wayman Stewart, according to Wayman's DNA. Wayman is also related by DNA to the manager of this profile, Carl Comer, and another Wikitree contributor, Edward Comer, based on FTDNA. The other two great grandchildren are most likely related to these people as well.

DNA Confirmation

Paternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Carolyn Martin and her first cousin, Omer Loaden Windham Jr. Their most-recent common ancestors are their grandparents, Joseph Grady Atkinson and Caroline Elizabeth (Freeman) Atkinson. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 1st Cousins, based on sharing 838 cM across 35 segments; Confidence: Extremely High.

Maternal relationship is confirmed by a AncestryDNA test match between Carolyn (Atkinson) Martin and her daughter Bree Nicole (Martin) Waugh. Their most-recent common ancestors are James Lewis Atkinson and Jacqueline Yvonne (Stewart) Atkinson, parents of Carolyn (Atkinson) Martin and grand parents of Bree Nicole (Martin) Waugh. Predicted relationship from FTDNA: Mother/Daughter, based on 3,486 cM across 24 segments.

Dear Carolyn,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. There will be three participant PIP Teams to start -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team who guide new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team. Please let us know which team(s) you would like to participate in.

For those of you who joined the Project before the Voyage started in late 2018, we would like to invite you to consider a "fast track" Voyage, especially if you plan to join the Biography Team. If you’re interested, choose a profile that you have completed to the best of your ability and compare it to the Voyage Biography Standards. If you’re at Level 2 or better, include a link to the profile in your response to this check-in for a “fast track” review.

We would also like to invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (When you request to join our GoogleGroup, please be sure to include your Wiki ID). You will find more information on the GoogleGroup.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project and WikiTree. The Project’s mission is to:

Make profiles beautiful! We clean up messy biography sections and sources, and try to set standards for attractive, useful, and well-written biographies, starting with those we manage.

We know you’re working on profiles *smile* We would like to hear about successes you’ve had toward the Project’s goals. We would also appreciate any feedback you might have to help us improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or privately via private message to either of us.

Sincerely,

Debi Hoag and Robin Shaules Co-Leaders, Profile Improvement Project

Hi, Debi. As you probably already know, I work constantly (seriously, for hours, pretty much everyday) developing, sourcing, and improving profiles. I am a data doctor, a sourcerer, a member of the Bahamas Project, and currently immersed in the US Black Heritage project also. I believe most of what I do on Wikitree falls under profile improvement, both for my managed profiles and others.

I would like to work on the Biography Team, if you approve of my writing style. I really prefer narratives. If you think I could be useful in another area, that's OK too.

I would also like to submit a profile I have written on my great great grandfather for the Voyage "fast track" review: William H Carey Sr. (abt.1845-1910) (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Carey-1749). I know the photo isn't the best, but I think the bio is pretty good. Anxious to see what you and the team leaders think.

Hi Carolyn

Thanks for getting back to us. We reviewed the profile and agree that you have Level 3 skills. There are a few things that Voyagers learn that you might be interested in that I will send via private message.

Do you have a preference which Biography Team Level you work at? Level 1 is for your own watchlist and whatever you run across. For Levels 2 & 3, we will direct you to some specific groups of profiles that need help.

There was a problem with the link for the GoogleGroup. If you were interested in joining, here is a correct link: https://groups.google.com/u/0/g/wtprofileimprovement?hl=en

Thanks again for wanting to continue to work with us. I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi, Carol!

Thank you for your participation in October’s 2020 Source-a-thon. Your contributions helped us to clear over 57,000 profiles that needed sourcing. This makes our Shared Tree all that much better.

Keep up the great work!

And if you can please add your question that you will be working on or the profile marked "needs profiles created" for the challenge. Thanks.

Got a question, see this page:https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Integrators_Project_Challenge_Outline&public=1   and ....

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Integrators_Challenge#How_the_Challenge_Works   Also, you can put a sticker on your profile You can do so by adding the words Integrators Challenge with the {{ }} in front and back, in your biography.

Thank you and Good Luck!! Dorothy,  Integrators Project Coordinator.

Hi, Dorothy. I am working on sourcing today. I think I inadvertently hit the integrator's challenge when I meant to hit the Sourcerer's Challenge on one entry. Sorry! No way to change it.
