In the 1880 census for Slickford, Wayne County, KY, the family surname is truncated to "Atkins". Listed on this census are Joel and Natha (age 32), and children Peter F (age 10), Samuel (age 9), Canthady (sic) (Canzada) (age 8), Sarina (age 6), William J (4), Turel (Terrell Rowe) (2), and Wyate G (Wyatt Grady) (age 0).

In the 1900 census for Magisterial District 3, Slickford, Wayne County, KY, Peter Atkinson, age 32, is head of household. Also residing here is his wife (named as "Annie", age 26), and their children John (10), Henry (8), Elbert (sic) (3), and Willie (1).
