James Atkinson was the son of Thomas and Machala Seeley .[1]
He was born March 25, 1850 on Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia.[1][2]
He was a mariner by trade.[2]
He married twice.
His first marriage was to Elizabeth E. Symonds, the daughter of Mary E. Symonds, on December 11, 1872 on Cape Sable Island.[3]
The couple had at least 5 Children:
1. Mary Ada born December 1, 1873[4]
2. Maria born November 2, 1875[5]
3. Marie Odessa born October 24, 1876[6]
4. Sadie Elizabeth born May 20, 1880[7]
5. Bessie D. born May 24, 1883[8]
His second marriage was to Zilpha Ross, the daughter of Aaron Ross and Deborah Nickerson, on July 7, 1888 on Cape Sable Island.[2]
The couple settled on Cape Sable Island where they raised their family of at least 5 children:
1. Mary Elizabeth born circa 1890[9][10]
2. Forman James born May 18, 1894[11]
3. Russell Levi Atkinson born circa 1896[12]
4. Luretta R. born circa 1899[10]
5. Rupert Winslow born December 1, 1907[13]
He joined his partner, Augustus Nickerson, when they attempted to go lobster fishing from Marks Island. Realizing that Marks was a rugged place to fish from, they moved their fishing operation to Spectacle Island (Specs). Lobster fishing , then being a March to May fishery, James stayed the summer catching and drying cod, but it appears that he only fished from Specs for a few years before returning to Cape Sable Island.[14]
James died September 17, 1935 at Clark's Harbor[1], and was buried at The Hawk September 20, 1935.[1]

Wikipedia: Canadian Confederation: Canadian Confederation was the process by which the British colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united into one Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. Upon confederation, the old province of Canada was divided into Ontario and Quebec; along with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the new federation thus comprised four provinces. : Last accessed online February 9, 2019 at: Canadian Confederation
