OBITUARY. Death Claims Prominent N.S.W. Pastoralist. THE death yesterday of Mr. John Messman Atkinson, at the age of 83, removes a citizen who has been prominent in commercial and pastoral afrairs of this State for 62 years. Born in India, the son of Major-General E. H. Atkinson, he went first to a military college in England, but afterwards entered the office of a tea broker. He came to N.S.W. in 1872, and after some experience of station life became manager of Coonimbla Station, at Coonamble, for Mr. P. H. Osborne. After a partnership with Mr. H. H. Osborne in Thorndale's 150,000 acres, he managed Currandooley, Lakelands, and Orange Plains Stations, and in 1890 purchased Canomodine Station, and managed Bangaroo for Mr. Hamilton Osborne. Some years later he came to Sydney and, entering commercial life as a director of Warden Harry Grave, Ltd., trustee of the Osborne and Rutherford estates, and director of the Mercantile Mutual Insurance Co., Ltd. For several years he was president of the Stock Owners' Association. He married Miss Caroline Dunlop, daughter of Mrs. D. H. Dunlop, of Burburgate station, Gunnedah, who survives him. There are three children living— Mrs. George Grant, of Tarmworth, Miss Margaret Atkinson, and A. M. Atkinson, of Dalblair, Tamworth. Mr. Atkinson was privately cremated yesterday.
(Jun 1934). PROBATE. The estate of the late Mr. John Messman Atkinson, formerly of Elizabeth Bay, grazier, has been sworn for probate at £21,707. Mr. Atkinson died on April 18, at the age of 83 years.
"TO THE WINDS". GRAZIER'S ASHES. The will of the late John Messman Atkinson, grazier, of Elizabeth Bay, contained the following clause: — "I direct that my body be cremated, with as little expense and ceremony as possible, and that my ashes shall not be preserved, but shall be thrown to the winds, and that there be no flowers." Mr. Atkinson, who died on April 18, 1934, aged 83, left an estate in New South Wales valued, for probate purposes, at £21,707. He appointed as his executors and trustees his widow, Caroline Worsley Atkinson; his daughter, Margaret Nott Atkinson; his son, Alan Montague Powell Atkinson; and Henry Nicholas Head, of Sydney, agent. He left his estate to his widow and children, subject to a legacy of £500 to Henry Nicholas Head, in lieu of executor's commission.
