Biography

Jane Atkinson was born about 1834. She was the daughter of Matthew Atkinson and his wife Margaret Reay ( written Reare in her death records) She may have been born at Durham, and christened on 24th August 1834 at Newcastle on Tyne.[1]

1853 Migration

Jane migrated to the Colony of Victoria in 1853 on the SIX SISTERS with her parents Matthew and Margaret and siblings; Margaret, Esther, Joseph, Ann and Elizabeth. They came from Newcastle on an assisted passage and arrived in Geelong on the 31st of January 1851. She was at about 18 years of age and could read and write. She went to work for Mrs Fitzpatrick of Lamonds Park and was initially paid £26 and 30 shillings.

1853 Marriage

Jane Atkinson married Samuel Garlick in Geelong, Victoria on 7th May 1853[3]She may have married Alex Henderson in Victoria in 1868 [4].Alexander Henderson died in 1874 aged 28.[5] Jane was referred to as Jane Garlick in her father Matthew’s Will, the probate of which was distributed in 1888.[6]

1902 Death

She passed away in Snapper Point Victoria in 1902. [7][8] Her daughter, Ann Thorne, testified at a coroner’s inquest into her sudden death.

Research Notes on Husband

1. A Samuel Garlick, age 25, convicted at Wilts Quarter Sessions for seven years, was sent from London on the ship "Gilmore" for Australia on 5 Oct 1838 (Dob 1813). Arrived in Van Diemans Land on 24 Jan 1839.

2. A Samuel Garlick, convicted at Chester Quarter Sessions for forteen years was sent from London on the ship " Woodbridge" for New South Wales on 10 Oct 1839. Arrived on 26 Feb 1840. Convict Samuel Garlick, age 28 from Chester, was transported from Norfolk Island to Tasmania on the ship "Maitland" on 14 Feb 1844 (Dob 1816). UK Parish Record: Samuel Garlick born 29 Dec 1815, baptism 4 Feb 1816, St Peter & Paul Sheffield, Yorkshire. Parents John & Ellen Garlick.

3. Samuel Garlick departed Hobart for Adelaide on the ship "Timbo" on 19 Mar 1846.

A Samuel Garlic from Manchester died in 1868 his age was given as 50 (Dob 1818). BDM Victoria Death Record 3980/1868. Samuel Garlick, buried at Geelong Eastern Cemetery, Born unknown, Died 16 June 1868. Nearly all of Jane's children were born in Geelong or Queenscliffe.

Chester and Sheffield are near Manchester, (2) dob 1816 is looking to be Jane’s husband? More research required.
