Biography

The daughter of James Atkisson and Margaret Mendenhall of Tennessee, Sarah was born in Tennessee shortly before they moved to Illinois and later to Iowa, where she met and married Benjamin Franklin Cozad. They had three boys: Jacob, who was born about 1856 and died before 1860; James, who lived until 1925; and William, who died young in West Virginia in 1861. There is some speculation that James might actually have been Sarah's youngest sibling, adopted around the time of their mother Margaret's death in the late 1850's. Sarah died just a couple of weeks after her husband. Her obituaries said that she never recovered from his death and died of grief.
