Biography

Source for all is most likely from the History of Wayne County, IL, publication facts unknown: "Nathan Atteberry was born August 10, 1803, in South Carolina. He was next to the youngest of 14 children. He went to school in Kentucky where he lived several years. In the Fall of 1819, he came to Wayne County where he has lived ever since. He came with his older brother. Here on Turney's Prairie he lived with an old gentleman and the first winter went to school about three months. Nathan Atteberry, a farmer, resided in the Fairfield precinct. His father, Richard Atteberry was born in South Carolina where he farmed; he died in Grayson County, Kentucky. The mother of our subject was Rebecca (Bennet) Atteberry born in South Carolina, died in Kentucky. ------ He finally bought 40 acres at $1.25 per acre and with a brave heart and hardened muscles went to work improving it. At one time he owned 300 acres of land and now owns 128 acres a part of which is the old homestead. He was married twice. First wife Maria Butler, was a native of Kentucky and died here in 1861 leaving eight children of whom three are living - Warren, David and Thomas. The latter is living in California. His present wife Martha A. (George) Atteberry is a daughter of William W. George, Esq., a prominent citizen of this county. This union was blessed with four children: Martha M., William W., Delbert B., and Oscar B. Mr. and Mrs. Atteberry are active members of the Missionary Baptist Church and their standing in the community is the very best. Mr. Atteberry is a true type of our old pioneers and quite strong in body and mind for a man his age, he having seen eighty summers. He is no politician but is identified with the Democratic party. Obituary

Wayne Co. Press August 16, 1888

Nathan Atteberry died at his residence in Barnhill Township, Aug 5, 1888, after a short illness. Aged 84 years, 11 months and 25 days. The deceased was born in South Carolina, (Columbia) August 10, 1803. In early childhood he came with his parents to Grayson County, Kentucky, where he remained until 1820 when he came to Wayne County, Illinois, where he continued to reside until his death.

He was first married in Wayne County in 1824 to Miss Maria Butler, with whom he lived until her death in 1863. he again married in Wayne County in 1864 to Mrs. Martha A. Loftus, who still survives him. He leaves 8 children and was united with the Regular Baptist Church at Hopewell in the year 1820 and was baptized in Close's Creek where his membership remained until 1855, when he united with the Missionary Baptist Church at Pleasant Gorve. Remains were laid to rest in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF NATHAN ATTEBERRY, Dated July 1, 1887

I, Nathan Atteberry, being of sound mind and memory do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say FIRST: It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid in full by my Executor hereinafter named. SECOND: After the payment of such debts and funeral expenses, I devise and bequeath to my wife Martha A. Atteberry all the rest and residue of my personal property of every kind and description, except as herein after provided, to have and to hold the same as her absolute property forever, she to divide the same with our daughter Martha A. Wright as she desires. THIRD: I give and devise to my youngest son, Oscar B. Atteberry one yoke of yearling steers with the proviso that he keep the same until they are fully matured to use on the farm unless he should desire to go to school, in which event he is hereby authorized to dispose of the same for the purpose of hireing (sic) a hand in his place on the farm while he attends such school. FOURTH: I give devise and bequeath to my two sons, Delbert B. and Oscar B. Atteberry all my real estate known and described as follows to wit: The NENE Section 29 and about eight acres off the East part of the NWNE and also one acre out of the Southwest corner of the NWNE Section 29 and the South half NE Section 29 all in Township 2S, Range 8E, Wayne County Illinois and to hold the same jointly until my youngest son shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years and to be free and clear of any incumbrance, except the homestead and dower of my wife Martha A. Atteberry, it being my wish and desire for ,my said wife to occupy use and enjoy said real estate together with my two sons herein named during the natural life or while she shall remain my widow, but in case she should again marry after my decease, I then desire that her homestead shall cease and my sons herein named let into the possession thereof free and clear of any homestead and dower rights that my wife may have in and to said real estate. FIFTH: I give and devise all my real and personal estate of what nature or kind soever to David W. Atteberry, the Executor of this my last will and testament herein after nominated and appointed in trust for the payment of my just debts and the legacies above specified with power to sell and dispose of the same at public or private sale at such time or times and upon such terms and in such manner as to him shall seem meets whom I hereby appoint sole Executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 1st day of July (AD 1887) in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and eighty seven.
