Emma Groom was born in Wonersh Surrey on 4 January 1851. She is the daughter of Jonas Attfield and Harriet Cooper. Emma was christened on 2 February 1851 in Wonersh.
As a young woman, Emma worked as a domestic servant. In 1871, Emma gave birth to a son, George Henry Attfield, out of wedlock. We believe George's father may have been George Weller (his name appears on young George's marriage record).
Emma was 31 years old when she married her first husband, James Tasker, in Croydon Surrey in 1882. Emma and James would have 3 children together before she was widowed in 1890. At the time of the 1891 census, Emma was working as a dressmaker.
Emma married for a second time, to Arthur Groom in 1896 in Croydon. Arthur had been widowed in 1895 and he had a number of his own children. No children would come from this second marriage. At the time of the 1901 and 1911 census, Emma and Arthur were residing in Croydon. Emma would be widowed again upon Arthur's passing in 1930.
At the time of the 1939 England Register, Emma was residing in Hatfield, Hertfordshire with her daughter Mary and her family. Emma is recorded as being 'incapacitated' at that time.
Emma passed away in Hatfield in 1942 at about age 91.
