Event: note Note: His father omitted him from his will as he had been provided for previously. 3 death Note: ADM 1/384 newark, Gibraltar Bay, 15th March 1763. SIR, I beg that you will acquaint my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, with the following unlucky circumstance that has lately happened between Mr John Blankett, first Lieutenant, and Mr. Jeremiah Attwick, Purser, of His Majesty’s Ship Isis, under my Command. Lieutenant Blankett firing at sea gulls from the stem of the Ship, the Purser ridiculed him, as a bad marksman. and proposed standing his fire, at forty yards distance, for a six and thirty shilling piece; which the Purser frequently repeating, Mr Blankett gave him the Money, and about two or three hours after, they went on shore, to Gibraltar, where in sight of many people (who seeing them cheerful, and joking each other, imagined no mischief could have ensued) Mr Blankett fired at the Purser, and struck him with a ball in the foot; he was immediately carried to the Hospital, where his Leg was cut off, and he died in two days. Lieutenant Blankett has been tried by the Civil Power, and is now under Sentence of Death, but the Jury have strongly recommended him to mercy, from many favourable circumstances at his Trial. This young Officer bears the best of characters, and I flatter myself with hopes that their Lordships will be pleased, on that account, to recommend to His Majesty, as an object of compassion. I am, etc. PEIRCY BRETT. To Secretary of Admiralty (Minuted: Own receipt & let him know that His Majesty has been graciously pleased to extend his Royal Mercy to Lieutenant J Blankett. 18 April).
