There are sources that state that Stephen's brother Caleb married Abigail Bradley in 1729 and that she was the mother of all but the eldest of his children. Jacobus explains the error as follows: From “Families of Ancient New Haven” Compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus pg 504 “A. Errors in the original records Original vital entries should never be "corrected" unless they can be proved erroneous beyond the shadow of a doubt. There are unquestionably a few mistakes made by careless clerks in the New Haven records, and the following corrections are made for the benefit of genealogists who might otherwise be misled. For convenience, page references refer to the page of the recently published New Haven Vital Records, and not to the page of the original…. “ Page 213. Caleb Atwater and Abigail Bradley married 18 Dee 1729. Other records prove conclusively that it was Stephen Atwater, brother of Caleb, who m Abigail Bradley; Caleb m in 1727 Lydia Benham (page 210) & they had 11 children.” The other records mentioned are the records of the birth of Stephen and Abigail's children.
