Biography

Merton R. Atwell GREENFIELD CENTER -- Merton R. Atwell, 75, a lifelong resident of Greenfield Center, passed away following a long illness Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at the Wesley Health Care Center in Saratoga Springs with his loving family by his side. Born Aug. 21, 1933 in Greenfield, he was the son of the late Roy H. and Margaret E. (Humes) Atwell. Merton graduated from Saratoga Springs High School, class of 1952. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1958. On Sept. 6, 1958, Merton married Patricia Cleveland at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Corinth. Merton was a great family man and was known by his contagious smile. He was also an avid gardener and landscaper. All of his gardens (including the vegetable garden) were specially designed by him. Another important part of his life was his church and music. Merton was a marvelous singer and enjoyed dancing. Besides his parents, Merton was predeceased by a brother, Charles Atwell. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Patricia Atwell; his daughters, Lynn Gibson and her husband, Peter, of Greenfield, and Laurie Isley and her husband, Scott, of Johnstown; nine grandchildren and their spouses; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margie Jones and her husband, Earl, and Beatrice Sesselman and her husband, Sylvester; a sister-in-law, Ruth Atwell; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at the Barkersville Christian Church, 7200 Barkersville Road, town of Providence, Middle Grove, NY 12850. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Fellowship will follow the funeral services in the Barkersville Christian Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday in Corinth Rural Cemetery. Flower donations may be delivered to the Densmore Funeral Home Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth, NY 12822 on Wednesday for Thursday's services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Densmore Funeral Home Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth.
