Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Daniel Atwood is a part of US Black heritage.

Daniel was born on the Chilachi Planation near Prairie Bluff, Alabama in 1843. His father was the plantation owner, Henry Stiles Atwood. His mother was Atwood's slave, Mary Massey. Henry Atwood fathered several children with at least three of his slaves. His will, written in 1843, freed these women and their children upon Atwood's death, which occurred in 1851. There was a lengthy legal battle, but ultimately they were freed. Mary and her children were living in Ripley, Ohio, in 1860.[1]

Daniel served the Union in both Ohio and Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Colored Infantry. [2]

Daniel married Rachel Messer on 6 August 1863 at Muskingum County, Ohio.[3] In 1870, they were living in Pittsburgh.[4] In 1880, they were living in Washington, D.C.[5]

Daniel died of consumption on 1 April 1888 in Zanesville.[6] Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery.[7]
