At that time, there are also apostasy, particularly in the 1850s, the best known is certainly that of Francis "Zome" Auclair (1814-1893), son of Charles, living in "rang des Étangs". He married, in 1846, Sophronie Vadnais, who gave him fifteen children. At 46, he was going to christen their eighth child, Georgina, born June 20, 1860. Sir Millie then curé was to baptize her. But, there was a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding whose origin remains unknown. Mr. Auclair left the priest in a profound disagreement to the point where he returned home without having baptized her daughter.
Then the Pastor of the Church of Marieville came on the scene. He had heard about the frustration of Mr. Auclair, he offerred him the hospitality of the church and free religious services. François Auclair therefore went, on October 15th, with his wife and four of his children to have them registered in the Baptist church. In the accompanying ceremony, Joseph, Ulysses, Ludger (Udger) and baby Georgine were baptized. Subsequently, his descendants claimed that church, except the eldest, Sophronie, who remained a Catholic to be buried in the parish cemetery. Nine sons survived François, who died at the age of 78 years in 1893, and they have a numerous posterity. The clan is divided between several Auclair brothers of François. The best known Saint-Hilaire Auclair's are those contained in the records of the Catholic parish.
Special Note: A descendant of François Auclair told me (the compiler of this book) that the disagreement between François Auclair and the priest of the Catholic parish occurred because the priest chastised François for not having baptized his children shortly after birth. There were three other children of François and Sophronie who had not been baptized. As a result, François stormed out of the meeting with the priest and vowed never to return to that Catholic Church. As a result of the meeting with the Pastor of the Baptist Church, most of his children remained with the Baptist church and were married in the Baptist Church in Marieville and had their own children registered there. In the Baptist Church in Marieville, children are registered, rather than baptized, although the word "registered" may be just another term for Baptism.
