Biography

Agnes Aucoin was born on 20 October 1682. She was the daughter of Martin Aucoin and Marie Jeanne Gaudet. She was baptized the same day at Beaubassin, Acadia. Her godparents were Louis Morin and Francoise Chiasson.[1][2]

In 1686, at Baye des Mines, Agnesse (sic), aged 4, was living with her parents, Martin AUCOIN, aged 35, and Marie GAUDET, aged27, and her seven siblings: Martin, aged 12, Marie, aged 10, Michel, aged 9, Isabelle, aged 7, Louis (sic), aged 6, Alexis, aged 3, and Cecille, aged 7 months. The family owned 1 gun and had 15 cattle, 10 sheep, and 6 hogs.[3]

She was recorded again in the 1693 census at age 11.[4]

She married Claude Thériot, son of Claude Thériot and Marie Gautrot, around 1703 in Acadie.[5]

Together they had eleven children:[6]

  1. Unknown Theriot (c.1704-)
  2. Anne Thériot
  3. Marie Josephe Theriot
  4. Jean Baptiste Theriot
  5. Magdelaine Thériot
  6. Pierre Thériot
  7. Cyprien Theriot
  8. Charles Thériot (1720-1756)
  9. Françoise Thériot
  10. Marguerite Theriot
  11. Joseph Simon Theriot (1728-1752)

Claude died in 1752, a few years before the Grand Dérangement.

On 5 September 1755, hundreds of Acadian men were imprisoned at the St. Charles des Mines church in Grand Pré. The names of these men appear on a list of prisoners that was dated 15 September 1755 and indicated the name of their village, the number of children in the household and livestock owned. Her son Pierre's name is on that list; no children or possessions were recorded for him even though he was married and had 6 children at the time. He was possibly with the other spokesmen for the community who were being held prisoner in Halifax. The families were required to prepare for deportation within 30 days.[7][8]

On 27 October 1755, Agnès was deported from Grand-Pré with her son Pierre, his wife Marie Josèphe, and their six children. They were deported to Virginia aboard one of 14 ships that departed that day. The governor of Virginia refused to accept the now impoverished prisoners, and on May 1756, on the Fanny Bovey, they were deported again, from Virginia to England.[8] The ship transporting 204 Acadians arrived in Falmouth, England on 18 June 1756.[9]

She died in 1756 in Falmouth, England.[8][10]

Research Notes

In the 1686 census at Baye des Mines, Louise was spelled Louis and Agnès was spelled Agnesse.[11]
