Biography

Margaret de Audley, suo jure Lady Audley, was daughter and heiress of Sir Hugh de Audley, Earl of Gloucester, by Margaret de Clare. She was born about 1322-4 (age 20 in 1342).[1]

Marriage and Issue

Before 6 Jul 1336, as his 2nd wife, Margaret married Sir Ralph Stafford, K.G., one of the original founders of the Order of the Garter, 2nd Baron Stafford, steward of the King's household, and who was subsequently raised to the Earldom 5 March 1351, and died in 1372.[1]

In 1346, Margaret and Ralph received a papal indult for plenary remission.[1]

Known Children

Children of Sir Ralph Stafford and Margaret de Audley, in order:

  1. Ralph de Stafford (married Maud of Lancaster)[1]
  2. Hugh de Stafford, KG[1]
  3. Elizabeth de Stafford (married 1st Fulk le Strange, 2nd John de Ferrers, 3rd Reynold Cobham)[1]
  4. Beatrice de Stafford (married 1st Maurice Fitz Maurice, 2nd Thomas de Roos, 3rd Richard de Burley, KG)[1]
  5. Joan de Stafford (married 1st John de Cherleton, 2nd Gilbert Talbot)[1]
  6. Catherine de Stafford de Stafford (married John de Sutton)[1]

They also had a third son, Thomas. Richardson does not indicate Thomas' birth order relative to his sisters.[1]

Known children of Sir Ralph Stafford and Katherine Hastang:

  1. Margaret. who married Sir John Stafford[1]

Notes on Merges and Disputes

Please see preferred sources for the Magna Carta Project. In this case, Douglas Richardson's work is preferred to Rogers' and Burke's regarding the children of the two wives of Sir Ralph de Stafford. More work still needs to be done as Richardson shows both wives having a daughter Joan. Specifically, Margaret's daughter Joan de Stafford married 1st John de Cherleton, 2nd Gilbert Talbot. Ralph's wife, Katherine Hastang also had a daughter Joan de Stafford who married Nicholas de Beek.[3]

(The two half-sisters Joan now separated)

As of 16 Jan 15, there are no pending merges.
