Johann Augenstein was born in Ispringen, Baden-Württemberg on November 2, 1801. He married Johanna Dorothea Kling in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ispringen on October 14, 1827. After having their first child, Johann Friedrich Augenstein in November of 1827, the young couple and their son came to the United States, arriving together in Baltimore, Maryland in October of 1828. The family soon began using the surname Augustine and settled in Lower St. Clair Township in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh sometime before 1840. John and Johanna Augustine had a large family in a home in a lot in South Pittsburgh (in what is now called the South Side) in between Carson Street and Manor Street near Sixth Avenue. John Augustine purchased this plot in January of 1849 and the Augustine family lived here through January 1872. John Augustine died in West Pittsburgh in on January 1, 1857 and left this property to his widow and children.

The friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Thursday morning, January 1st, at 10 o'clock, from his last residence, West Pittsburgh, without further notice.
