Biography

NOTE: John Thomas Auld was born about 1845 or early 1846 to Susannah Roper and John Auld. He was baptised 3 Mar 1846. ^[1]

John Thomas Auld was married twice:

His first wife was Elizabeth Barbara MacAuley. Elizabeth was born abut 1852. They married on July 12, 1870, John and Elizabeth had three children. Sadly Elizabeth died at 34 years of age on December 09, 1886.

Their children's names were John Hamilton Auld (b. September 21, 1871-d. May 29, 1942) and Mary Jane Elizabeth Auld (b. December 24, 1873) and James Thomas Auld (b. May 26, 1876 -d. March 10, 1881). James Thomas Auld was 4 Years and 9 months old and died of diphtheria.

John Thomas Auld immigrated to the United States in 1868; but returned to Prince Edward Island and married Elizabeth B. McAuley in 1870.

After the marriage they possibly returned to the states and all the children were born there. It is possible that after the youngest child, James Thomas Auld died March 1881 that the parents returned to Prince Edward Island for a short time as they are in the PEI 1881 Census living on Lot 31 and doing farming. The census does not show James Thomas Auld in the Prince Edward Island 1881 Census.

• Since there is no birth records of the children, but baptismal records (without birthplace); the children may have all been born in the United States.

After Elizabeth died it shows John Thomas Auld living in Boston and remarrying. His son John Hamilton Auld also states when marrying Alice D. Webster that he was born in Boston, Massachusetts even though the Virginia 1900 Census states he was born in Canada. It may be the stepmother Charlotte did not have the correct information when filling out the census if she was the one who gave information to person doing census.

John Thomas Auld's second wife was Charlotte Smith. According to Massachusetts marriage record; Charlotte Smith was born in Germany. Charlotte must have immigrated to the states with her parents at abut age 2 years. Charlotte resided in Boston and was a weaver in a factory. This was her first marriage. She was 37 years old when they married on May 15, 1889; and they had two children. Lottie H. Auld and George A. Auld.

John Thomas Auld and Charlotte Smith must have moved to Virginia for work after their daughter Lottie was born in Massachusetts as their son George A. Auld is born in Virginia.

The 1930 Massachusetts Census shows John Thomas Auld and his wife, Charlotte Smith back in Massachusetts. They must have retired back there.
