James was the son of George Austen and Cassandra Leigh, baptised at Deane in Hampshire on 13 February 1765. [1] He was educated at St John's College, Oxford. [2]

James married Anne Mathew at Laverstoke in 1792 [3] and moved into the Parsonage at Deane, displacing the Lloyd family, friends of his sisters, Jane and Cassandra. [4]

He passed away in 1819.
