Note

Note: A schoolteacher for many years, notably at Harrington, Maine, Cora's ability to teach was, no doubt, aided by her remarkable history of world travel.
Her father being away at sea for great stretches of time, Cora was left on the 1867 death of her mother to be raised by her uncle and aunt, John and Amanda (Wass) Austin. In the 1880s, she met and became romantically involved with Burt Tibbetts. Her adoptive parents did not approve of her choice, as Burt was not sufficiently educated in any trade to provide for a family.
Rather than risk having Cora disobey and be doomed to a life of poverty, John and Amanda Austin arranged for her to go to sea with two or more of her uncles, who were sea captains. One may have been her father's brother-in-law, William S. Nickels, the Master of the bark Mary E. Russell.
Cora remained at sea, travelling to distant and exotic ports, for seven years. She later reported to her children that she had "sailed 'round the Horn", and had visited China and South America. She had many souvenirs of her journeys, some of which survive.
The father of Cora's children, John and Amanda's objections aside, was Burt Tibbetts, whom she married in 1892 upon her return from the sea. In her absence, he had apprenticed himself to a stone mason and became successful in that trade. They shared but fifteen years of married life before a sudden illness caused his death. Cora turned to a teaching career to support her five living children.
