Biography

1859 - Samuel Austin was born on the 1st of December 1859 at Fiddlers Green in Theydon Garnon, Epping, Essex, England. [1] His parents were Charles Austin (a hay binder) and Lucy Austin "formerly White."

1860 - His birth was registered on the 5th of January 1860 in the Epping district.[2]

Samuel was baptised on 23 January 1860 in Theydon Garnon, All Saints, Essex, England.[3]

1861 - In the 1861 census Samuel (age 1) was enumerated as the son of Charles Austin in Theydon Garnon.[4] Also in the household were Samuel's parents and four older siblings.

1871 - In the 1871 census Samuel (age 11) was in his parents' household in Theydon Garnon.[5] Also present were his elder brothers William (22 yrs) and Charles (14), and a younger brother named Thomas Austin (age 9).

1879 - In June 1879 Samuel and his friend George Staines were found guilty of assault after they got into an argument with a fellow cricket-player (Alfred Freshwater.) During the dispute, he said they could hit him if they liked. In court, they argued that "they had done only what they were told they might." This didn't convince the magistrate, and they were each fined 2s. 6d. and costs.[6]

1880 - On the 11th of December 1880, in Theydon Garnon, Samuel married Susan Oakley.[7] He was 22 years old, the son of Charles Austin, and she was 21 years old, the daughter of Thomas Oakley.

1881 - In the 1881 census the couple were enumerated at Fiddlers Green in Theydon Garnon. Samuel was 21 years old, a "Haybinder Ag[ricultural] Lab[ourer]".[8] Susan was 22 years old. Also in the household was their baby daughter, Mary A. Austin, 1 year old, who had been born before her parents' marriage.[9]

1883 - On the 3rd of February 1883, Samuel was found guilty of assault after beating up an acquaintance, Henry Pattifpher, outside the local pub. Apparently the dispute started "some time ago" when Henry overheard Samuel and his wife having an argument. Henry "was continually telling people in the village about the disagreement [Samuel] had had with his wife," and matters came to a head on a Saturday night at about 10:30 pm when Samuel and his brother Charles ran into Henry near the Theydon Oak. Samuel accused Henry of gossiping, and Henry "denied that he had talked about the subject." So Samuel struck him. Charles pushed Henry away from his brother, and may-or-may-not have struck him as well. Henry "got away from them as soon as he could, and on reaching home he had to wash himself, as he was covered with blood, resulting from the blows he had received." The magistrates "did not consider the case against Chas. Austin proved, and accordingly dismissed it, but fined Samuel 5s. and costs 12s.6d., or in default of payment 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour." [10]

1891 - In the 1891 census Samuel (age 29) was the head of household in Coopersale, Theydon Garnon, Essex, England.[11]

1901 - In the 1901 census Samuel (age 38) was the head of household in Epping, Essex, England.[12]

1911 - In the 1911 census Samuel (age 49), Hay Binder, was the married head of household in Coopersale Street Near Epping S E, Epping, Essex, England.[13]

1933 - Samuel died in about 1933 and was buried on 7 December 1933 in Theydon Garnon, All Saints, Essex, England.[14]

"Epping, Feb. 9," Chelmsford Chronicle (Chelmsford, Essex, England) 16 Feb 1883, page 2 [digitized newspaper online] Newspapers.com (www.newspapers.com : accessed 20 Feb 2023). -- EPPING, Feb. 9 -- Magistrates present -- Major Tait, in the chair; and W.S. Chisenhale Marsh, Esq. -- THEYDON GARNON : ASSAULT. -- Samuel Austin, 23, and Charles Austin, 26, brothers, described as labourers, of Theydon Garnon, appeared in answer to summonses charging them with having assaulted and beaten Henry Pattifpher, blacksmith, at Theydon Garnon, on the 3rd inst. -- Samuel pleaded guilty and Charles not guilty. -- Complainant stated that as he was proceeding home from the "Theydon Oak" about half-past ten o'clock on Saturday night, the 3rd inst., he met the defendants; Samuel spoke to him about some "chaff," and Charles told his brother to strike him, which he did; he told them they would hear further from him about the matter, whereupon Charles said he would not pay for nothing, following up this remark with a blow; he (complainant) got away from them as soon as he could, and on reaching home he had to wash himself, as he was covered with blood, resulting from the blows he had received. --Wm. Green, who was called to give corroborative evidence, said he saw Samuel Austin strike complainant, but he was not sure whether Charles did or not, as it was rather dark at the time. --In justification for his conduct, the defendant Samuel said some time ago he and his wife had a few words, after which the complainant came into his yard and asked him whether he had any "chaff" to sell; complainant was continually telling people in the village about the disagreement he had had with his wife, and on the night in question he spoke to complainant in reference to the matter; complainant denied that he had talked about the subject, and in consequence of this denial he (defendant) struck him. -- Charles Austin stated that he merely pushed complainant away from his brother. -- Supt. Lennon informed the magistrates that Samuel Austin was convicted of an assault in June 1879, and in November, 1880, Charles was convicted for damaging shrubs in the Forest. -- Chas. Austin: I beg your pardon; I never saw a summons in my life before last Tuesday. -- Mr. Creed (deputy magistrates' clerk): There is another Charles Austin; it is a notorious name. -- Supt. Lennon (to defendant): I am glad you mentioned it. -- The magistrates did not consider the case against Chas. Austin proved, and accordingly dismissed it, but fined Samuel 5s. and costs 12s.6d., or in default of payment 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour. --A week was allowed for payment.
