Biography

This biography was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import.[1] It's a rough draft and needs to be edited.

Typescript from Ruth Gilruth, August 1970: "William (my grandfather) married Rebecca Austin. The last time I saw my Aunt Alice Pixley - their youngest daughter - she gave me this bit of information about her mother, Rebecca. She was born near Luray, Virginia. Her father was a well-to-do farmer but came to the conclusion that slavery was not right; he freed his slaves, sold his land and moved to the Northwest Territory, which had prhibited slavery forever in its boundaries. Two elderly house slaves did not wish to be freed but wanted to stay with the family so they were brought along and cared for until their death. After Austin's move to the Ohio Territory he purchased land and as a county record relates, "became an industrious farmer and valuable citizen of the community." To build his home he had bricks shipped from Virginia and as a young girl Rebecca remembered people coming on Sundays to view it since it was the first brick house built in that area.

2. George Aston, (III), Captain in George Connolys Pennsylvania Regiment in 1775. He married (1) Hannah Phipps before 1772. Hannah was a daughter of Joseph Phipps of Chester County. George married (2) around 1787 to Esther Keiser of Shenandoah County, VA. (Keyser also spelled Kiser, Kizer and Kriser) George and Hannah Phipps Aston lived in Botetourt County Va., during the 1772-1785 period for he is listed as a juror in several Botetourt County Court cases during these years. George Aston and his brother, William, were apparently ardent patriots of the Revolutionary cause, because they were cited in court for disrespect to the officers of the King, and Colonel William Fleming acted as surety on their bond. (ANNALS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA; Chalkley)
After his and Esther's marriage, they settled for a while in Russell Co., VA, along with her brother Joseph and sisters Mary and Elizabeth, before moving to Lawrence Co., Ohio, where Esther died.
Bought property in Sciotto Co., Ohio, in 1797. He is on the 1820 census in Lawrence Co, Ohio
From the Ironton Register
February 1, 1872 to July 18, 1872
Transcribed by Mary Ann St. Louis
About this time, Stephen COLVIN, and ______BARKLEY, of Rumley, VA, in company entered all the bottom from Kelly's section down to the French Grant. George AUSTIN bought, and permanently settled on this farm. His wife's maiden name was Esther KISER. Their children's names were Mary, Isaac and Rebecca. Mary married George TRUMBO; Isaac married Lydia KISER; Rebecca married William GILRUTH. Austin was an industrious farmer and valuable citizen.
