Hannah was married first to James C. Rextrow (abt.1800-1831) in 1825 in Andover, Massachusetts. Hannah and James had three children and James died in 1831.

Hannah was married a second time to James Gilman (bef.1804-1870) in 1835 in Andover, Massachusetts. Hannah and James had six children. Three of these children died in infancy and the other three died young. Only one, Hannah F. (Gilman) Carr (1839-1866), married and had a child.

Research Notes

  • Only the baptismal records link Hannah to her parents. No birth record and no parent names on her marriage records. Find a Grave links her to John Austin and Dorcas Carlton and them to their parents.
  • "Topsfield Historical Society; Topsfield, Massachusetts; Vital Records of Andover, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849, Massachusetts, Compiled Birth, Marriage, and Death Records, 1700-1850," Ancestry.com, Hannah Austin, Birth Place: Andover, Baptism Date: 11 Sep 1803, Father: John Austin, Mother: Dorcas Austin; Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2018, Lehi, UT, USA, (but no birth record located) The same source also has a transcription labelled birth, but it gives the same date so likely not birth.
  • The probate record of Hannah's brother Daniel Frye Austin (who did not have surviving children) lists among his heirs-at-law the children of Hannah Austin Rextro who was a sister. (Massachusetts Probate, Middlesex County, Estate of Daniel F. Austin, 1882, Case 14642)
  • In 1844 Hiram Osborn Tuttle (relationship unknown) petitioned for and was awarded guardianship of two of Hannah's sons (James Rextrow's sons): James Edward Rextrow (age 16) and George W Rextrow (age 14).[1]
  • U.S. Federal Census: 1830 likely the female with husband James Rextrow and 1 son.
  • 1850 U.S. Census Hannah was with husband James Gilman, hannah, emily, and charlotte; son George's grandparents-in-law (the Freemans) lived next door.
  • At the time of the 1850 U.S. Census Hannah lived next to Cato and Judith Freeman, Lydia Freeman's grandparents. Lydia [Freeman-15876] is son George Rextrow's first wife. Three of Hannah's daughters were still living: Hannah, Emily, and Charlotte.
  • 1855 Massachusetts State census Hannah was counted with son Charles Rextrow, and daughters Hannah, Emma, Charlotte.
  • 1860 U.S. Census Hannah was counted with son George (Rickstraw transcription), daughters Emma and Charlotte, and granddaughter Georgianna (Rickstraw). Hannah's daughter Hannah Gilman Carr lived next door with her husband.
  • 1865Mmassachusetts State census Hannah was counted with daughter Hannah, her husband John Carr, their daughter Carrie/Clara, and granddaughter Lydia F. Rextrow (George's child).
  • 1870 U.S. Census Hannah was counted with son George Rextrow and granddaughter Georgianna Rextrow, son-in-law John Carr, and granddaughter Carrie Carr.
  • There are two George Rextrows in the household for this census. Seems likely that it was an entry error.
