Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Autrey was a North Carolina colonist.

From USG Archives: William Autry was the fourth child of Cornelius Autrey. [William] was born about 1745 and died before 1790 when his wife Rachel is listed as head of household.[1] In the 1790 census Rachael Autry was in Sampson, North Carolina, United States, with five children enumerated, but not named.[2]

William was born about 1740, the son of Corneilus Autrey[3] and Elizabeth Culbertson.[4]

He lived in North Carolina, perhaps in Pitt County, where William Autry appears on the Early Tax List as a 1762 resident.[5] Around 1765, he married Rachel (maiden name unknown). They had numerous children, among them a son named Newsom.[1][3] Some consider that Newsom was also his wife's maiden name.

There were at least five children according to the 1790 census.[2] Bundy (1996), also indicates that William (circa 1745-1790) and Rachel Autry were the parents of five children, but Newsom, Alexander and Starling were the only ones named in the Bundy text.[3]

  1. Alexander Autry[3] (circa 1767-1840)
  2. Starling Autry[3] (circa 1770-1846)
  3. Newsom Autry[3] (circa 1780-1853) He married Nancy Culbreth. His will of July 12th 1853 names Clarry and 13 children. From his family came the Sampson County Autrey's."[1] Bundy (1996) states that Newsom married Nancy Pharis as his first wife 17 Jan 1803 and had 10 children; and, that he and his second wife Clarry Culbreth (1810-after 1845), had three children.[3]
  4. Archibald Autry (born 1780) - A record attached on FamilySearch appears to show Calton Autry as his son, but the marriage record is for 2 Dec 1869, which seems late and a misplacement. Two candidate Archibald Srs are in the mix, as well.
  5. Agnes (Autry) Honeycutt (1784/7-1852) who married John Honeycutt, who may have predeceased her (although FamilySearch suggests he died in 1858 and shows him in a Crumpler household in 1850): In the 1850 census Agga Honeycut (age 63) was head of household in Sampson, North Carolina, United States.[6]

He died in 1784, in Sampson County, North Carolina, according to the Suggs Descendants of Cornelius Autry report, listed in the Research Notes. Others indicate 1790: William Page Autrey was mentioned on a memorial with a death date of 1790, but no burial location is specified. The memorial contributor cites the Bundy text.[4]

Research notes

  • Paige and Page have been shown by some family tree creators as his middle name. No records place his name as anything other than William Autry. Perhaps it is a placeholder to indicate his mother's maiden name as being Page.
  • Previous editors of this profile reported the following, without a source: wife McBride. If sources are provided, please move this to the Biography section.
  • George Kinchen Autrey (circa 1775-1832) was shown as a son of William, but no records prove this relationship. George was living in Sampson County with his own household in 1830 - an immediate neighbor of Ransom Autry who may be his near kin: * 1830 Census: "United States Census, 1830"

  • RE: Mahan Blair Autry Book. Cited in Forum Surnames by unspecified genealogy.com user 9 Nov 1998. Corneilius Autry with wife unknown is named as the father of William Autry of North Carolina. However, the William Autry that is later listed is a William Autry who married Tobitha McBride. Accessed 16 Mar 2024. Someone indicates that Autry (1964, p. 7-8) discussed William Autry, son of Cornelius, but the text does not continue the line, directly from Cornelius through William's children: Autry, Mahan Blair. The Family and Descendants of Captain John Autry. 1964. Corsicana, Texas: Author.

Children of William Autry (1805-12 Feb 1884) and Tobitha McBride

These children were grand-children of Jacob Autry, and great-grand-children of Captain John and Elizabeth Autry.

A Different William Autry of 1790 Pitt County

  • In 1790, a William Autry is found in the Pitt County census, with 3 free white males under 16, plus a wife and small daughter.[7] This seems inconsistent with his wife, Rachel having an Autry household at the same time, in Sampson.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
