Ellender was born on 4 August 1830 in Oglethorpe, Georgia, United States. She was the daughter of Benjamin Edward Avent and Olive Crain (Patton) Avent.[1]
When Ellender was 38 she married James Monroe Sack Choate on 24 February 1869 in Karnes City, Karnes County, Texas, United States. The couple had 6 children: William Choate, Bingham Choate, Beauregard Choate, Silvester Choate, Charles C. Choate and Charles C. Choate.[2]
