Biography

John was born before 1751, based on the fact that in his 1769 Georgia land grant application, he is listed as married. He received 150 acres in St George Parish which became Wilkes Co after the Revolution. He is the only Averett listed in Georgia Colonial Records.

He received 2 land grants in the Washington/Hancock Co areas based on his military service during the War. He also received several other land grants over the years.

He passed away about 1811.

His family is not documented but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence as to his sons: David, Matthew, Drury, and Allen.

At the time of John's death in 1811, Allen was listed as a minor heir of John Averett. He selected Drury Averett as his guardian.

After John's death, Drury bought part of John's land holdings from John's administrators who were David and Matthew Averett.

David and Matthew Averett were administrators of John's estate. According to one land deed, both of them had farms on property owned by John Averett.

In the 1805 GA land lottery, John, David, and Matthew were in line together when registering for the land lottery.

Based on less information, it is also possible that Jeremiah Averett and a Benjamin (#1) Averett were also sons of John Averett.

We have a group of about 60 people who have combined our dna results. Group analysis indicates that David, Matthew, Drury, and Allen were brothers.

DNA also proves that William Averett, Benjamin(#2) Averett and Archibald Averett were related to John Averett. Exact relationships are unknown but they could have been brothers.

Our group has no dna from descendants of Jeremiah Averett or Benjamin (#2).

DNA also suggests that John had at least one daughter. FamilySearch

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
