Biography

Elizabeth Avery was born in New York State, probably in Cortlandt, one of 6 known children born to Thomas Nash Avery and Eliza J. Carrroll. Two of her siblings died young - Thomas and George Avery. (Her obituary records her name as Elizabeth A., but other records show her middle name was Nash.)

She came to Matawan with her parents as a young child and on Jul 24, 1896 married Dr. Herbert Sutherland Cooley a prominent physician who had a practice in Keyport. Dr. Cooley was born in Pawling, Dutchess Co, New York He attended Peekskill Military Academy and studied law at Columbia College, NY before he decided to enter the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia.
