Soldier and Pioneer Dies

John Avery passed away on February 26 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Bensonson at the age of 91 years.

The funeral of Mr. John Avery, whose death we mentioned in our last issue, was held on Saturday at the home of his daughter Mrs. Joe Bensonson. Reverend J.E. Bowes conductive the service.

Mr. Avery was born January 14, 1823, at West Point, New York. While still a child, he moved to Ashtabula County, Ohio. In 1846 he was married to Miss Lydia Ketchum. In 1857, they moved to Warsaw, Minnesota. In October 1861, he enlisted in 4th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. After serving one year, he was discharged for disability. He came to Lyon County in 1868 and was one of a trio of pioneers who settled in Custer Township. For a number of years, he has made his home in the city with his eldest daughter, Mrs. Joe Bensonson. All of his six children were present at the time of his death.
