Biography

John Avery was born 24 Jan 1737/38 at Groton, Connecticut. He was the seventh child of Elizabeth Smith & James Avery.

American Revolutionary War service: Captain John Avery was a Revolutionary War Veteran. Per the Avery genealogy, He was a sergeant in the eighth Conn, militia, in Capt. Hubbard Burrows's company (Conn. Men in the Rev'n, 451). He often carried dispatches in the Revolutionary war.

He married Sarah Belton, and they had 6 children:

  1. Peter Avery (1764-1845), b. 10 May 1764; married 1) Hannah Avery; 2) Nancy Ann (Smith) Ledyard
  2. Jonas Belton Avery (1766-1836), b. 19 Jul 1766; married Esther Denison
  3. Mary Avery (1769-1853), b. 25 Dec 1769; married Caleb Avery
  4. Elizabeth Starr (Avery) Lester (1771-1854), b. 31 Dec 1771; married Nicholas Street Lester
  5. Aaron Avery (1776-1826), b. 21 Dec 1776; unmarried
  6. John Sands Avery (1782-1848), b. 19 Aug 1782; married 1) Bethiah Williams; 2) Sarah Denison Smith

Captain John Avery passed away 05 Jan 1826 at Groton. Burial was in Avery-Morgan Burial Ground Groton Connecticut [1].
