Biography

Helen Baldwin Avery, daughter of William Burrill Avery and Helen Mar Baldwin, was born in Groton, Connecticut, 3 September 1864.[1][2][3]

Wilbur Lucius Cross married Helen Baldwin Avery on July 17, 1889. She was the daughter of Wiiliam Burrill Avery, Civil War Veteran, and Helen Mar Baldwin of Mansfield, She born Groton, Connecticut, 3 Sept 1864. (p101). The ceremony took place at her parents home in Willimantic. The Rev. S. R. Free officiated. He and Helen spent five years in Pittsburgh, then moved to New Haven, where he taught at Yale University.[2]

Helen typed Wilbur's manuscripts and was the only one who ever saw them before publication.[2]

"Wilbur Lucius Cross came, a quiet and I think a rather shy young man, bringing with him his charming bride, Helen Avery, whose pink cheeks were like wild roses. She was like a flower, indeed, in her freshness and simplicity. ... I'm afraid we didn't fully recognize the quality of Mr. Cross when we had him here among us."[4]

Wilbur Cross' autobiography mentioned the death of his wife: "on Jan 19, 1928, death suddenly took away a devoted wife and mother and left me desolate. That was the darkest day in my long life."[2]
