Biography

James was born about 1812 and was baptised in 1821 in Maidstone as the son of James Avery and Ann (née Bowles).

However, DNA has suggested that he was adopted by James James Avery and Ann Ann Bowles- certainly he was born well before their marriage in 1815. There is not a DNA match between William Avery descendants and descendants of James' sister Sally Carr, nor with descendants of Ann Bowles' sister Sophia Wood, BUT there is a match betwen those WIlliam Avery descendants and descendants of Thomas Wood. The current hypothesis is that James is the son of Elizabeth SISLEY, married to Thomas Wood senior in Frant, then after his death, to Thomas AVERY, eldest brother of aforesaid James senior. He married Mary Ann Rose on 26 May 1833 He came to NZ in 1857 aboard the Palmyra, with his son John, landing in Nelson in March 1858. His wife, son William and two daughters sailed out to join him in NZ aboard the Mariner in 1859. He passed away in 1889 age 78 [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
