Biography

This Abel Avery, born 3 Feb 1801 at East Charlemont, Massachusetts, was the eleventh child (son) of Eunice Avery (1767-1854) & Amos Avery (1758-1818).

He married 11 October 1826 @ Groton, New York, Emeline Huldah Andrus [b. 18 May 1806 @ Winchester, Connecticut, daughter of Ezra & Pauline (Phelps) Andrus]; they had 9 children:

  1. Pauline Louisa (Avery) Monroe (1828-1905); married James D. Monroe
  2. Amos Warren Avery (1831-1863); married Mary Ann Hitchcock
  3. Horace Andrus Avery (1833-1913); married Rozetta Clementine Avery
  4. Lucius Abel Avery (1835-1910); married Susan Elizabeth Sylvester
  5. Edwin Cicero Avery (1837-1862)
  6. Matilda Sarah (Avery) Monroe (1840-1918); married Henry Monroe
  7. John Alfred Avery (1842-1862)
  8. Augusta Emeline (Avery) Forrest (1844-); married Richard J. Forrest
  9. Joel Grant Avery (1847-1908); married Helen Schell

We note that two sons of this family (bold) died in the American Civil War.

Abel Avery was an edge-tool maker by trade.

Abel Avery died 30 Apr 1881 at Monroe Center, Michigan. His final resting place is unknown [1].
