Biography

Richard Avery was a son of Eunice (Leffingwell) Avery (1757-1813) & Ransford Avery (abt.1754-1849) of Montgomery, Massachusetts.

Note: His birth data are uncertain. Whereas the Avery genealogy published the date as Nov. 1, 1796, thus making him a twin of his brother Ransford, his grave stone is inscribed simply with the year 1797. Making matters more confusing is the header panel for his online memorial site which presents the date 1 Nov 1799, for which no source is given, thus probably erroneous.

He married first, 18 Jan 1821 [published banns] @ Montgomery, MA, Anna Pettis [b. 2 Sep 1792 @ Montgomery, MA, daughter of Abial & Eunice Pettis]; they had one child:

  • 2446.i. Eliza Avery

Richard Avery married second, 4 Sep 1825 [published banns], Mercy Hutchinson (1804–1875); they had 3 children:

  • 2447. i. MARY JANE Avery; m. Jerome J. Pomeroy.
  • 2448. ii. ANGELINE Avery; m. ____ Lyman.
  • 2449. iii. CAROLINE C. Avery; m. ____ Clark.

Richard Avery died 23 Jun 1867 at Southampton, Massachusetts. His grave is in Center Cemetery, Southampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA [1].

His will was probated Aug 1867 at Northampton, Massachusetts (Northampton Wills, 56:557).
