Biography

Trueman Gardner Avery was born 30 Jul 1837 at Lenox Furnace, New York, the first surviving son of Jared Avery and Cornelia Benham.

Trueman Gardner Avery was prepared for college at the Oneida Conference Seminary; graduated Hamilton College in 1856; studied law with Judge Israel Selden Spencer at Syracuse; afterward at the Albany Law School where he was graduated LL. B.; was admitted to practice in 1859; practiced in New York City; removed to Buffalo in 1860; soon gave up the law for mercantile pursuits.

He married 19 Feb 1868 @ Buffalo, New York, Delia Stewart Austin [b. 8 Dec 1842 @ Buffalo, NY, daughter of Lavinia (Hurd) & Delia Stewart Austin]; they had 2 children, born at Buffalo, New York:

  1. Jessie Avery, (16 Mar 1871 - 19 Jan 1872)
  2. Lavinia Austin Avery, b. 31 Mar 1876

He was a member and a trustee of the First Presbyterian Church; a Republican in politics; a director of the Merchants' Bank; a trustee of the Fidelity and Guaranty Company; a trustee of the Buffalo Orphan Asylum; president of the board of trustees of the Buffalo General Hospital; a life member of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences, of the Young Men's Association, and of the German Young Men's Association; president of the Niagara Frontier Landmarks Association; and a Son of the American Revolution. If it had not been for his energetic and unselfish action, The Groton Avery Clan would not have been published.

Trueman Gardner Avery died 14 Mar 1914. His grave is in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA [1].
