Biography

Cross of St George
George Avery was born in England.
George was a shipwright.

George was born to Samuel Avery and Jane (Birchall) Avery, and was baptised 30 September 1814 in East Stonehouse, Devon, England. [1] His father, Samuel, worked as a ship's carpenter on the HMS Ville de Paris, and so was frequently away from the family home in Cawsand, Cornwall.

On 18 October 1834 in Plymouth, Devon, [2] George (aged 20) married Thomasine Dunstone (aged 19) and the couple started married life in Cawsand, with George working as a shipwright. Together they had ten children: John Dunstone, George, George, Jane, Elizabeth Emma, George, Elizabeth Emma, Thomazine, Susanna Maria, and William Henry. All three sons called George died young: ages 2, 5, and 7.

When George ceased work as a shipwright and began to work as a carpenter in the late 1860s, he and Thomasine took over the Halfway House Inn in Maker, Cornwall, where she worked after his death in 1878.

George died on 6 May 1878 at the "Halfway House Inn" of jaundice (3 months) and exhaustion from passing a gall stone. [3] He was buried in Rame, Cornwall. [4]
