Biography

William Thomas Avery was born 11 Nov 1819 at Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tennessee. He was the first child of Nathan Avery and Rebecca Rivers [1].

Note: His middle name 'Thomas', as published in the Avery genealogy, is confirmed by the name as inscribed on his grave marker: Wm THOMAS AVERY. He may have carried the nickname 'Tecumsah', or may have preferred to use this name as appears on the banner panel of his online memorial site, and also on his Confederate officers card [2].

He married 16 Dec 1852 @ Holly Springs, Mississippi, Emma Chastelett(e) Jones [b. 10 Feb 1835 @ Athens, GA, daughter of Louisiana (Lumpkins) Jones; d. 4 Oct 1887 @ Memphis, TN]; they had 3 children, of which their second remained unmarried, producing no children of record:

William T. Avery was a lawyer; member of (Tennessee) state legislature; representative in Congress 2 terms; confederate army in Civil War, taken prisoner, sent to Johnson Island in 1862; after the war resumed his profession. His property rights in Memphis, Tennessee, were restored 19 Aug 1865 [3]. He was enumerated in the 1870 census with his wife and 3 children in Memphis [4].

William T. Avery died 22 May 1880, by accidental drowning in Ten Mile Bayou, Arkansas. His grave is in Elmwood Cemetery, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, USA [5].

Avery-8222 and Avery-5689 appear to represent the same person because: Both represent the same child of the same parents.

Avery-8222 and Avery-5689 do not represent the same person because: Although it is the same person, my info is correct according to actual information passed down through my family. WT Avery was my gg grandfather.

They being the same person, then the two profiles must be merged. We can't have 2 profiles for the same person. The way to handle the middle name situation is fairly easy. While conducting the merge, simply check the middle name box (circle) as uncertain, then explain in the biography that his middle name probably was Thomas, as already alluded to in the nickname field of the Avery-8222 profile. He may have been called 'Tecumseh' by family members as a nickname. Keeping in mind that the Avery-8222 profile is unsourced (thus uncertain), the only published reference states that his middle name was Thomas. If you have other evidence, please post it to the profile as the merge proceeds. You could do that in the form of image files such as you have mentioned as being passed down to you. You can scan documents into jpg or pdf file format, then upload them to the Wikitree profile. Once there, you can link any other existing profiles to it.

I'm re-starting the merge process now.
