Biography

This profile is part of the Nowell Name Study.

James Risdon Avery was born on 26 Feb 1891 in Friendship, Crockett County, Tennessee to Charles and Elizabeth Roberson Avery.[1] On his WWI Draft Registration, Jim is listed as having a tall slender build with black hair and blue eyes.[2] He married Hettie Nowell on 7 Dec 1910 in Dyer County, Tennessee,[3] when he was 19 and she was 15. They had four children. Hettie died at the age of 24 in 1919. On the 1920 Census, Jim is living with his mother in Halls, TN, with three of the young children, one had died at the age of one.[4] This researcher cannot find Jim on any more censuses, but he is in Memphis in The City Directories in '24, '34, '41, '54, and '56.[5] He has different occupations in these: river man, painter, and a cook in a hospital. His death record says he worked on riverboats,[6] hence the nickname "Riverboat".[7] He passed away on 28 Jan 1957, and is buried in Floyd's Chapel Cemetery at Broadview, Crockett County, Tennessee, USA.[8]
