James was born in 1849. His parents were Thomas Avery and Elizabeth Turvey. ^{[1] [2]}

He married Ellen Sophia Doughty in 1873. ^[3] Ellen died in 1877. ^[4]

In 1881, James was living with his son, Walter. ^[5]

It is not yet known whether he stayed in England or emigrated to the U.S. with Walter.
