1815 Birth James's Cemetery record records an age of 62 when buried in 1877. Hence a derived birth year of about 1815.

1838 Marriage James married Ann Hillier on the 16th April 1838 at Trevethin, Monmouthshire, Wales.

FamilySearch records the marriage between James Aves and Ann Ellier. [1] Reference to the original Monmouth Marriages and Banns indicates those names were indeed recorded. James' father is John. Witnesses to the wedding include Thomas Palmer and Lydia Aves (sic).

1841 Census There is a census record for James Avis aged 25-29, Ann Avis aged 20-24 and Martha aged 2 in Trevethin, Monmouthshire where James is a miner. There are 2 other children - Jane Avis aged 7 and new born Harriett Avis. [2] There is also a 20 year old Mary Hillier.

1842 Immigration James and wife Ann and daughter Martha (aged 3) sailed from London to Nelson on the Sir Charles Forbes. [3] James is a 26 year old miner and lime burner - implying a birth year of about 1816.

1877 Death James was buried in the Picton Cemetery on the 26th December 1877. [4] There is no NZ BDM record for James Avis in 1877, but there is 1 for 1876 - 1876/3845 - for a James Avis aged 60.
