Biography

National Flag of Wales
William Awbrey was born in Wales.

William is the son of Thomas Awbrey and grandson of Richard Awbrey and Anne Vaughan.

This William married Elizabeth Awbrey who is the daughter of William Awbrey (brother of Thomas). [1]

Elizabeth's father arranged for her marriage to her cousin, William, to ensure his properties would remain in the Awbrey family. Both were underage at the time of their marriage in 1646. William's wife, Joan, was charged in the will to care for William and Elizabeth.[1]

They had a successful marriage as they had 10 children as attested to on William's tomb. The inscription reads:

"Here lyeth the Body of William Awbrey of Llanelyw, son of Thomas Awbrey Gent. Married Elizabeth daughter of William Awbrey. Had issue Ten. Richard, William, 2 Thomas, Theophilus, Anne, Mary, 2 Martha, & Elizabeth. Departed this life in Hope of a Joyful Resurrection, the 16 of December 1716 aged 90." [1]

The number 2 preceding Thomas and Martha indicates there were two children of that name one of which died. There were tombstones in the churchyard indicating the first Martha died in 1662 and the first Thomas died in 1669. [1]

William's gravestone is leaning against the outside back wall of St. Ellwy's church in the Parish of Llanelieu. Find A Grave: Memorial #200355396 No death is listed for her .[2] (See photo in Images taken by Stuart Awbrey August 2018.)

It is probable that William was a member of the Society of Friends. It is certain that his sons, Richard and William and his daughter Martha, belonged to that religious denomination.[3]

Son William married Letitia Penn daughter of William Penn. [1]

Daughter Martha married Rees Thomas. They lived in Pennsylvania.[1]

I see that this William Awbrey was possibly part of the society of Friends. This is a possible clue to the connection to Joan Awbrey Price, who also was part of the Friends and removed to America. Also, other family members closely related to Joan Awbrey Price in America were connected with William Penn.
